Radiation and Chemotherapy

Patients with tumors often have a poor prognosis due to treatments applied to remove them. These treatments reduce immune functions of organisms which leads to greater susceptibility to infection. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for cancer (tumors) today.

In a two year study, Merchant et al., (1990) Chlorella added to the diet of 21 patients with malignant glioma. By taking Chlorella, fewer respiratory infections and flu-like disease was observed. According to this study, the immune system functions are maintained at normal levels and their action is less affected when patients undergo chemotherapy and / or taking immunosuppressive drugs, such as steroids.
