Oxidative stress is a major cause of loss of age dependent memory and cognitive impairment. Accumulation of cytotoxic aldehydes derived from lipid peroxides may be responsible for age-dependent neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer's disease.
Using transgenic mice fed extracts of Chlorella sp. containing β-carotene and lutein, Nakashima et al., (2009), stated that prolonged consumption of Chlorella has the potential to prevent the progression of cognitive impairment.
